Claude Code can build a small business website without WordPress, and it can even wire up a WordPress-style editing dashboard. The catch is what comes after launch: logins, databases and security become your job. The safest place to start is one tiny free tool that answers a single buyer question.
What Claude Code does differently from a chat window
A browser chat gives you text to copy and paste. Claude Code lives on your computer, through VS Code, the terminal or Claude Desktop. It creates the files, runs the commands, and tests its own work. When a command fails, it reads the error log and rewrites the code until the error goes away. Think of it as a new hire who needs clear instructions and a check on their work.
You will need a paid Claude plan or API credits to use the VS Code extension.
Payload and Puck: WordPress-style editing
The setup people point to is Payload, an open source dashboard for managing content, paired with Puck, a visual drag-and-drop page builder. Puck is a real open source React editor, and a community plugin connects it to Payload. The tutorials we tracked show Claude Code pulling down the packages, generating the database schemas and connecting the components. Jono Catliff's video pitches this as "the last reason to use WordPress (and Elementor)" and says he built a plumbing-company site and admin dashboard in three prompts. That is the video's claim. We did not verify that Claude Code handles the whole integration without help.
The objection is shifting. It used to be "can AI build the site." Now it is "can a non-developer edit it afterward."
The $20,000 website claim
Influencers such as Jack Roberts promote fully animated 3D sites built with tools like Spline and Three.js, under titles like "$20,000 sites." These are sales pitches for high-touch agency work, not passive setups. We could not verify the price claims, so treat them as marketing.
The upkeep trap of full apps
Give Claude Code a job that needs user logins and a live database and you have signed up for password resets, security patches and database migrations indefinitely. Hosting, form handlers and security also become yours once you leave a managed platform. WordPress still has a case here: as @wilreynolds described, AI-assisted checks can cover many client sites quickly after a critical vulnerability.
Feed the AI facts, not guesses
Our example is a home gym fit checker. It takes room length, width and ceiling height and uses plain arithmetic to say whether a power rack fits. If the AI estimates product dimensions from its training data, users get bad advice. Supply verified dimensions and tell it not to estimate. The AI builds the interface well, but checking the math is still your job.
Three things to try today
Download VS Code and install the Claude extension.
Create an empty folder, open it in VS Code, and ask for a single-page tool, such as a basic rate calculator.
Ask Claude how to run the page locally and preview it in your browser.
Why free tools sell: the IKEA tape measure
IKEA hands out free paper tape measures, likely because measuring builds the confidence to buy. A free web tool that answers one buyer question can do the same job for your business.
FAQ
Can Claude Code replace WordPress for a small business?
It can build the pages and a WordPress-style editor with Payload and Puck. You then own hosting, security and maintenance, so it fits best for simple content sites.
Do I need to know how to code?
No, but you do need to describe what you want clearly and check the results, the way you would review a new hire's work.
What should I build first?
A single-page tool with no logins that answers one buyer question, such as whether a product fits a space.
Why do full apps cause problems?
Logins and live databases bring password resets, security fixes and migrations that never end.
